Facebook has said its WhatsApp messaging app would begin to provide in-app buys and hosting solutions, as it proceeds to boost revenue from the app whilst knitting together e-commerce infrastructure throughout the company.

The planet’s biggest social networking firm has been trying to improve sales from higher-growth units such as Instagram and WhatsApp, which it purchased in 2014 for $19 billion but was slow to monetise.

With the modifications, WhatsApp will allow businesses sell goods inside WhatsApp via Facebook Shops, an online store found in May to offer a unified purchasing experience round Facebook’s apps.

The business will also input the cloud computing sector, offering businesses who use its client support messaging tools the ability to keep those messages on Facebook servers.

WhatsApp’s principal operating officer, Matt Idema, stated in an interview that the purchasing tool would begin rolling out this season, while message hosting could become accessible 2021.

Idema said WhatsApp would provide the hosting service for free to try and draw new paying clients to its business tools, which cost 0.5 cents to 9 cents per message delivered.

The app has a relatively small customer base of thousands of businesses, while tens of millions use its more limited free tools targeted at small companies.

Idema said talks with a businessutilising the hosting service will reveal those discussions are saved elsewhere rather than shielded from the app’s end-to-end encryption.

Facebook wouldn’tutilise message data hosted on its servers for other business functions, he further added.
