If you’re looking to get the most out of Google Analytics, then it’s important to set up goals.
Goals allow you to track conversions and see which traffic sources are driving the most valuable traffic. in this latest Knowledge Base post, we’ll share the best practices for setting up goals in Google Analytics.
1. Define your goals
The first step is to define your goals. What do you want to achieve with Google Analytics? Do you want to increase sales, leads, or web traffic? Once you know what you want to achieve, you can start setting up goals.
2. Create a goal in Google Analytics
To create a goal in Google Analytics, go to the Admin section and click on Goals. Then, click on the + New Goal button.
3. Choose a goal type
There are four goal types in Google Analytics:
Destination: A Destination goal is triggered when a user arrives at a specific page on your website. For example, you can set up a Destination goal for your Thank You page.
Duration: A Duration goal is triggered when a user spends a certain amount of time on your website.
Pages/Screens per session: A Pages/Screens per session goal is triggered when a user views a certain number of pages or screens on your website.
Event: An Event goal is triggered when a user completes a specific action on your website. For example, you can set up an Event goal for a button click.
4. Set up your goal
Once you’ve selected a goal type, you’ll need to set up your goal. For a Destination goal, you’ll need to enter the URL of the destination page. For a Duration goal, you’ll need to enter the amount of time you want a user to spend on your website.
For a Pages/Screens per session goal, you’ll need to enter the number of pages or screens you want a user to view. And for an Event goal, you’ll need to enter the category, action, and label of the event.
5. Assign a value to your goal
You can also assign a value to your goals. This is optional, but it can be helpful if you want to track the monetary value of your goals. To assign a value to a goal, go to the Admin section and click on Goals. Then, click on the goal you want to edit and scroll down to the Value section.
6. Test your goals
Before you start tracking your goals, it’s important to test them. To test a goal, go to the Admin section and click on Goals. Then, click on the goal you want to test and click on the Test Goal button.

7. View your goal reports
Once you’ve set up and tested your goals, you can start tracking them. To view your goal reports, go to the Reporting section and click on Goals. You’ll see a list of all the goals you’ve set up, as well as the conversion rate and total value for each goal.
