Facebook has banned ad’s on its flagship website and Instagram photo and video sharing support which claim widespread voting fraud, imply the US election results are invalid, or that attack any methodology of voting.
The business declared the new rules in a blog post, adding to earlier limitations on early claims of election victory.
The move came after US President Trump used the very first televised debate with Democratic challenger Joe Biden to amplify his baseless claims that the 3rd of November presidential election will probably be “rigged.”
Trump was especially critical of mail-in ballots, and he mentioned a number of little unrelated incidents to argue that fraud was happening at scale.
Facebook has been under fire for refusing to fact-check political advertisements more widely and for uncontrolled organic misinformation.
Citing hate speech rules, in addition, it has now moved to eliminate Trump campaign advertisements suggesting that immigrants might be a significant source of COVID-19 infections.
Facebook said the new election advertising prohibition would include those that “portray voting or census participation as useless/meaningless” or that “delegitimize any lawful method or process of voting or voting tabulation… as illegal, inherently fraudulent or corrupt.”
Facebook also cited advertisements that call an election fraudulent or corrupt because the end result was uncertain on election night or since ballots received afterward were being counted.
