A content management system (CMS) is a software application that supports the creation and modification of content in the digital environment.

The basic objectives of developing a CMS for the business is to (1) manage content; (2) create content items; and (3) collaborate.


Below is a list of the core features the content management system will include:

POSTING OF ARTICLES – Articles will be able to be posted in real-time to the live site and therefore be added to the content database and not be reliant upon any other technology set-up.

During this process the user will be able to choose the article type within the content management system.

EDITING OF ARTICLES – Articles will be able to be edited using a HTML editor on-board. This can be done at any time within the production lifecycle.

CMS SEARCH – The user will be able to search for relevant articles within the content management system. This will prove useful when adding relevant related links to content.

DELETING OF ARTICLES – Articles will be able to be deleted from the websites via the content management system. Once deleted the articles should not re-appear on the site(s). Again this means breaking the ‘bond’ with any existing content management system.

ORDERING OF ARTICLES – The order of articles on the portals should be able to be changed on stated list pages manually. These pages include the homepage, the news homepages and the homepages of any other content type.

The manual ordering of content items potentially increases the editorial value of the portal as the editor can conflate articles together into groupings along the same theme, but outside of the core website taxonomy.

The ordering of the articles on these pages will dictate the content ordering on any newsletter products.

SENDING NEWS ALERTS TO USERS – The ability to send News Alerts to members of the portals will enable the business to auto-magically market the business to members whenever the portal posts an article on a company and/or subject the end user has subscribed to.

For example a user interested in the nanosciences would receive an Email marketing the new article whenever we published one.

CREATING BESPOKE PAGES – Within the content management system designated admin and/or editorial users should be able to create bespoke pages as and when needed. These pages will be allocated the relevant web template, based on the specification.

ABILITY TO PREVIEW ARTICLES – The platforms content management system would allow the Editor to preview the article as it would render on the live site. It would do this by publishing the preview page to the staging server.

ABILITY TO ADD EXTERNAL EVENTS / WEBINARS – This will create a cheap new content source of value to both the end user; and also add to the proposition for corporate subscriptions.

ABILITY TO ADD / EDIT / DELETE WHITE PAPERS AND ADDITIONAL CONTENT – Again, the content management system should enable the user to load, edit, allocate and delete client white papers to individual portals. The white papers themselves should be able to be added to the site for stated periods of time.

This simple functionality will drive usage and also increase revenue opportunities by improving the renewal rate for both Marketing Services clients and the businesses corporate members.
